The Parliament of Rwanda has been put in place, after transitional period, through elections set up from 29 september to 2 october 2003.
It started working in october 10, 2003, after the swearing in ceremonies of members of two chambers.
The Parliament of Rwanda has two Chambers :
- Chamber of Deputies and
- the Senate.
Actually, the Senate of Rwanda has 26 members including :
- 12 senators elected by the specific councils in accordance with the administrative entities ;
- 8 senators appointed by the President of the Republic ;
- 4 senators designated by the Forum of Political organizations ;
- 1 senator elected among lecturers and reseachers of Public Universities and higher learning institutions;
- 1 senator elected among lecturers and reseachers of Private Universities and higher learning institutions.
The Senate has four main missions :
- To legislate ;
- To oversee the Government action ;
- To electe and appove high public officials referred to in article 88 of the Constitution ;
- To supervise the application of the principles referred to in articles 9 and 54 of the Constitution.
