This Tuesday, the 21/07/2009, the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ms NSANZABAGANWA Monique appeared before the General Assembly of the Chamber of Deputies on the questions posed to her earlier on, issues related to wild life from Akagera National Park which destroy crops of the residents in the neighborhood of the Park.
Among the questions she was asked include issues relating to designing of concrete policies of management of national parks in order not the animals to continue destroying crops of the residents and even killing them.
Issues relating to obstacles they encounter provoked the failure of implementing the demands of His Excellency the President of the Republic during his visit in the Eastern Province on 13/04/2007, relating to compensation that should be provided to the residents in the neighborhood of the Park. Measures were taken in order to fence the National Park because it was clear that animals which include elephants, buffaloes, hippopotamus and others were escaping from the Park to destroy crops of residents in the neighborhood.
The issue of failure to compensate or assist as required the members of the population whose relatives were killed, injured or those whose houses or crops were destroyed by wild life;
There is also an issue of claims of the residents of the neighborhood of the National Park of being penalized at any time they commit mistakes although the 1974 law which mentioned penalties in that aspect was abrogated in 2006.
